死を凌駕する概念② 〜北京を訪れて以降、度々訪れる感覚

天安門の城壁を上り、そこから広場を眺めてると小さな頃からテレビを通じて見た景色が蘇る。ここで色んな事が起こったがどだい、ここに居る人たちも「あの」人たちも僕とは違う人種だという事が嫌と言うほど分かる。というか、僕にこういうセンスは欠片も無いのだ。15分ぐらい黙って広場の景色を眺めていた気がする。正直、あまり積極的に思い出したいと思わないのは故宮やその他の巨大な公園に半日居た時も、夜に食事を楽しむ人々が集まる街を見ていてもそうだったのだが、僕は幼少期を過ごした場所で多くの中国人や韓国人に囲まれて育った事からこの景色や人々が醸し出す雰囲気を初めての体験ととても思えなかったのを認めたく無かった。この北京紀行の間僕は長い間、日本という土地に旅をしていたかのような感覚になった。が、しかし今立っている場所に愛着なんか持ちようが無いのだ。この分離されるような状況を受け入れ難く、思い出したいと思わないのは正に、幼少期に多くの外国人に囲まれて育った過去の事なのだろう。

日本に帰国し、すぐ翌日にアメリカに戻った。映画を一人で観るのが好きで映画館によく通っていた記憶がある。週末は図書館に出かけた。程なくコロナがニューヨークを席巻し、クオモ州知事が都市をロックダウンする。狼狽る人々に国籍は関係無い。経験の無い人は右往左往した挙句に最も高い買い物をするのは株式市場で「一番高い時に買い一番安い時に売ってしまう」人と酷似していて、そんな人達がそこらへんにいくらでも転がっていた。政治家は汚物のような言葉で互いに牽制し合い、それに群がるのはいつも暇人だ。日本では官僚や与党の政治家が恐らく死力を尽くしてこの混乱の対処にあたるものの、野党の見当外れな桜を見る会の追及に貴重なリソースを割かれ失望以外感じることは無かった。そんなSNSの空間から逃れようとするも、こちらは街はどこへ行っても誰も歩いておらず、対話する人間が居ないのであるからせめて本を読んだりするしか無い。結局は大きく逃れることは出来ない。

そんな折、こんな生活にも慣れてきた時分に、江青の写真の事をふと思い出してもう一度眺めてみた。やはりこれだけ大規模な裁判の中でも尚、江青は恐怖のようなものを感じているようにとても見えない。確か毛沢東の死後、彼を支えた政治家達は皆憂き目に遭ったと言われる。皆しかし恐怖や失望、絶望を感じているように見えない。何故江青らにそのような恐怖を示す表情が見つけられないのだろう。

その刹那、彼らは大きな歴史の一部だと自分を位置付ける事で、「死を凌駕する概念」を見出しているのでは無いかと言う論理が頭をよぎった。これなら自分にこれから起こることを憂う必要は無い、何故なら大きな歴史の一部なのであるから。で、あるからして歴史を雄大に捉える事の利点がここに存在するのだ。

この念を以ってもう一度逃れることを試みた時は成功。目的を大きく持って、ただそれをやることに何の躊躇いを感じる事が無くなった。

今年1月、僕が北京に行ったのは一部の人が知っているかと思う。

昨年の12月に日本に帰国し、毎晩友人との邂逅を愉しむ日々の合間には、中国に関して事前知識を入れておこうと雑多に読み物をしていたのだ。雑多という表現が相応しく、そもそもあまり「決めない」事をいつも「決めている」ので人より遅れを取ってしまう。要領はよく無いがその分偏見は無いように思える。自分が興味を持った事物について人に聞き、表情や口調で得られる破片を集めて何が見えるかを考える。少しずつそれを形にしていくのが僕の認知方法で、いつもそれは要領の良い人から言わせると非常に野暮らしい。いや、実際野暮なのだ。それを否定するものでは無い。だがその過程で得られた感覚は、少なくとも僕の時間軸の中で信頼に値する。

北京に着いて、まず考えたのは首都と言えど、この都市が冗長であるなという事だった。広い道路でも渋滞が慢性的で、建物は巨大だが点在している地域が圧倒的に多く東京とは違う。街特有の連続性を感じるのは、古くからの商店が風景の一部として残る地域だった。そこには物語を感じるが、雄大さのようなものは感じない。日本の子供達は想いの外中国史に触れている子が多い。僕はその量はともかく、三国志や項羽と劉邦に関する漫画を読むことに多くの時間を費やした。また、高校時代は漢文を読むのが比較的好きな方だったが北京の街を観る限り、当初は多くの漢詩や十八史略から垣間見える美学や雄大さのようなものを感じる事がなかった。それらをこの国の国民はどこに見出しているのだろうか。

僕が、気になった一枚の写真がある。日本に居る間の12月に四人組の一人、江青が裁判にかけられている写真を見た。僕が個人的にこの写真を見るに無念のようなものを感じない。国境を跨いでも時間に隔たりがあっても、人の表情からは何かが読み取れるものだ。この感覚は何なんだろうと思いながら北京紀行の後半はとうとう故宮と天安門の見学を残すのみとなった。

まず、一つ何を言えるかというと、故宮と天安門を一般開放していることに驚いた。故宮はそれ自体大きいが果たしてこれを一般開放して良いのかと思えるぐらい、痛んでいる箇所が散見された。その前提で、故宮で起こった事をガイドが解説してくれた。ここで、12月に仕入れた読み物の知識が少し活かされていたように思える。自分の視界にその時期に生きた人々が見えるような気がした。本当はもっとゆっくり妄想をしながら愉しむ事もできただろうが、そこはよく覚えてない。

最終日、天安門から広場を眺めたときに感じたことはここで様々な事が起こったという極めて当たり前の事だった。②に続く。

Planetary Boundaries - Case of Energy

Invention of steam engine in 1776 would be great contributor of economic progress. Fossil fuels drives the progress of industries, it brought them into energetic and efficient. We know fossil fuels should be replaced to keep our environmental aspect safer level, but we are not still free from fossil fuels even we have several options like renewable energy. Thus, energy efficiency is what we must deal with for pushing sustainable development. Because amount of energy consumption reflects the amount of productivity over the world. We cannot stop to use the energy. Even efficiently using energy resources are likely to be contributor of economic growth, we have not been able to do it. Therefore, we should contemplate why human beings has not been available to replace dirty energy into cleaner one. Here is interesting consideration. Domestic product per capita is in proportion to Energy consumption. The graph of the GDP per capita of an economy versus its energy consumption is close to a straight line, signifying that a doubling of the size of an economy tends to be associated with a doubling of primary energy use. On average, for every $1,000 of total production in the economy, the economy use tends to be 0.19tons of oil equivalent. (Sachs, 2015). From this observation, we “can” say the countries needs to consume energy source if they hope to keep and grow their economic force and scale. So, how should we do break through this circumstance, to be free from chronically carbonized cycle? There are three suggestion to deeply decarbonize. First, to pursue energy efficiency is to decline the energy per unit of GDP. Energy consumption of developed countries are going down if it can be achieved. Second, low carbon electricity including wind, solar, nuclear and so on should be adopted in order to decrease CO2 emission per megawatt. Third is to shift the technology from burning fossil oil to cleaner energy sources.

Planetary Boundaries - Introduction

Thomas Robert Malthus was English political economist whom An Essay on the Principle of Population had been written by. This book advocates warning of negative impact on the quality of human life due to surging and overwhelming population in 1798. In detail, population explosion will make carrying capacity of food supply at stake. This prospect could be causal of sixth extinction its reason is not natural event but humanity. In general, major extinction events so far have been brought by natural process like end of the Ordovician, Devonian, Permian, Triassic, and Cretaceous which are attributed of fluctuation of sea level, volcanic eruptions, comet shower and so on. (Sachs, 2015). This is the one of the reasons why Anthropocene should have been defined as the era that human beings are giving impact on environmental aspect including biodiversity. Climate change represents phenomena that humanity enforces ecosystem transform into another one. Here is how all species are at stake and well-defined by Johan Rockstrom, Planetary Boundaries. Rockstrom claims the earth has nine boundaries and they are all at stake by humanity as followings.

• First planetary boundary is human induced climate change that GHG emission cause it. And, it requires to control GHG emission in order to prevent worst and worse scenarios.
• Second is ocean acidification relating first one. CO2 concentration cause that oceans are going to be acidic. This rising acid level threatens marine species including corals, shellfish, lobsters, and very small plankton.
• Third one is ozone depletion. I personally remember we considered how to use refrigerator and sprays. From chemical point of view, CFCs rises into the atmosphere and attack O3. The hole made by humanity will be no longer capable to shut down ultraviolet radiation. In last, human gets negative impact such as skin cancer.
• Fourth one is concentration of nitrogen, phosphorus and other nutrients makes ground water and rivers polluted. This is the byproduct of excessive chemical fertilizer use for farming. All of those chemicals remain on the ground because crops do not take detrimental elements away.
• Fifth boundary is fresh water sources that all species need it to live. It should be consumed by 70% for agricultural use, 20% for industrial use, and 10% for household use. Aquifer gradually lost water sources even though rainfall recharges. Because population increasing helps depletion on amount of water in groundwater aquifer.
• Sixth boundary is land use that deforestation represents. The historical growth of population, technologies, and living standard leads expanding faming, industrial, and living place expanding. Deforestation breaks the balance of proportion on oxygen and CO2 on atmosphere, and it creates relatively massive crisis like a climate change and extinction of other species.
• The seventh we should pay attention to is biodiversity transition. This can be explained by quantifying number of species on terrestrial, marine, freshwater, and all vertebrate species. Variety of those species are decreasing into roughly under 70% based on number of 1970. Humanity massively contribute to break ecosystem by air and water pollution, deforestation, climate change, and freshwater depletion. This will be able to be sixth extinction not by natural event.
• Eighth boundary is called as aerosol leading. While we are burning coal, biomass, diesel fuels, other sources of pollution, much small particles in the air runs air pollution. This is directly giving negative impact for human health like lung disease.
• Last one is chemical pollution. This is causal including manufacturing, mining, and petrochemical need much of land use, water consumption, and pollution. (Sachs, 2015)

In this narrative, field beyond tipping points are to describe uncertain, dynamic, complex, and dangerous area. Boundary is threshold that scientist quantified with scientific proof. Now, four out nine subjects crossed boundary.

The ten rules of Burning Man, which is one of the greatest art events in the world, give the positive impact to drive sharing their vision of how Burning Man should be, while other founders are calculating how beneficial their events are. What is waiting beyond the vision of Burning Man might be freedom. Sometimes, someone misunderstands that freedom is not endorsed by the duties. I mean, the quality of the freedom reflects the quality of duties. But the democratic nation is now malfunctioning of the non-endorsed one that is spreading. The laws and government would lack as their resources to support the concept of freedom. Thus, Burning Man set the rules to support the freedom that the audience can access. For instance, what the audience attain beyond “Radical Inclusion” is the freedom of expression. There is no physical boundary to share their artwork with others because they have to join. The artists usually can be free because the audience definitely might be interested in their idea first, and feedback also might be given. Interaction has been assured by keeping “Radical Inclusion”. These rules describe how they get the freedom while the Burning Man. This is a reason why I personally think these are just great rules.

One of the issues is to get back to normal for the local community. The restoration in post event is the problem because we can access how dirty after the event there is by searching youtube about Burning Man. Actually, the audience cannot be free from this event until getting back to home. They must think they are observed by local people. No one can be perfect but, if I can say something about this event, the cleanliness of this area must be kept as a post event. Because the residents in the local area have to stay in this area, the audience should respect them.

To sum up, over the entities of social, economic, political context, sustainability is one of approaches to diminish the negative impact of limited sources and controlling the energy that is not protected by the ways such as renewable sources.

Those rules of Burning Man just seem the great principles but I personally advocate that the will of individuals supporting this event would be better to be intrinsically gained by voluntary action in which is for satisfying the desire to know something while others believe that the concrete rules will make the people behave ideally. If someone considers those rules as a the system approach, that might not be an entity of that we will discuss about what they are, and is not the way to gain the value of art events. So, an organization must separate the perception whether those rules will encourage the people's voluntary action for personal development or govern a certain areas. Of course, Burning Man, that is, must be considered as a former case. For instance, Sustainable Development Goal might be categorized as a latter case like a quality management system. The players know how the assessment will be implemented and what kind of targets they have. Also, it is likely to the collective action because the players can assure the liability of the organization which generally has the honored history like United Nation. However, the case of Burning Man still does not make clear what kind of the outcome will be done beyond these rules. After the watching a movie, the descriptions are diverse along the tendency of the people. The proposal of the disciplines of Burning Man can be obscure like above case and does not have to demystify the reasons of those. In this case, the founder of the event would be better to share his or her vision with the audience. The vision making gradually signifies how much generous this event is and also has appeared in the business settings. Lean start up is the process to approach the exploration of business development. The first thing the players are going to do is vision making. What is the business, how do they implement, and our business for whom? Those are the vision making in the context of the Lean start up process. It looks like the management system but the vision making has not been endorsed by scientific proof.

This kind of abstract scene such as the Woodstock Festival also makes us remember the radical actions. So, some people that have been in libertarianism think those as a weird event with the negatives and hesitate to think it as positive one. However, while their dreams are not harmful for other people that have different one, those rules work as just the great one.

持続可能性社会の実現に向けたアプローチというのは社会という曖昧なものを部門横断的に捉え、それぞれの要素に向けて同時的に手段を講じる事と同義と言え、最終的な目的としては例えばエネルギーのように極めて不安定視される要素について計画的な消費を促す事にもある。

バーニングマンで設定されている複数のルールはこのイベントのユニークさを支える非常に素晴らしいものである事は疑いようが無い。が、しかしこれを我々が統治するシステムのように解釈する事には異論がある。何故ならシステムというのはそもそもその設立目的が明確であり、期待する成果や対象は誤解も曲解も起こらないような考察がなされているのに引き換え、バーニングマンで説明されるこれらのルールはそれを遵守した場合の成果について明確なステートメントが無い。そこにはビジョンというこれまた曖昧なものを主催者と観衆が共有しているに過ぎず、しかしこのビジョンの共有は功利的、実利的な関係で行われていない事がこのイベントの持つ力強さを説明する材料になるだろう。しかしながらビジョンメイキングは昨今ビジネスシーンでも注目されている。例えばリーンスタートアップという新しい事業を開拓する為の手法に於いて一番最初に参加者が行うのはビジョンメイキングである。どんなビジネスをどのように展開し、それは誰の為であるかという問いを明確にするがしかしこれらのビジョンは科学的な裏付けを必要としない。この曖昧さがウッドストックフェスティバルが取り組みとして賞賛に値するものの結果を評価できない気持ち悪さにも似たような印象をもたらすのかと考える。これは新自由主義のような思想まで原理としての資本主義が進化している社会では尚の事、バーニングマンや持続可能性社会の実現に向けた取り組みがどこかこうラディカルで最終的には暴力的な側面を持つ事を避けられないような誤謬を産む事は否定できない。しかしながら、統治するシステムとこれらを対比して区別を可能にした本稿については一旦の満足できる結果であると考えている。
